Malaria & Undernutrition

219

million

cases of malaria were recorded globally in the 2017 alone.

92%

of all malaria cases happen in Sub-Saharan Africa.

93%

of all malaria related deaths occur in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Almost all people living in Sub-Saharan Africa are at risk of getting malaria. In 2017, malaria was responsible for 435 000 deaths. Children under 5 years of age are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria; they accounted for 61% (266 000) of all malaria deaths worldwide in 2017. Undernutrition is reported to be very high in areas with very high morbidity and mortality rates from malaria. Undernutrition also exacerbates diarrhea and respiratory infections in kids, hence, the reason why our pediatric program at DoctorsAct focuses in these key areas.
